Staying Safe in the Summer Heat: Tips for the UK

With UK summers becoming warmer and more unpredictable, it’s more important than ever to take precautions during hot weather. While we might welcome the sunshine, heatwaves can pose serious health risks — especially for children, older adults, and those with existing health conditions.

Here are some simple tips to help you stay safe and enjoy the sunshine responsibly:

1. Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid too much alcohol or caffeine, which can dehydrate you.

2. Dress for the Weather

Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothes and a wide-brimmed hat. Light colours help reflect heat rather than absorb it.

3. Avoid Peak Sun Hours

Try to stay indoors or in the shade between 11am and 3pm, when the sun’s UV rays are strongest.

4. Use Sunscreen

Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (at least SPF 30) regularly, especially if you’re outdoors for extended periods. Don’t forget areas like your ears, neck, and feet.

5. Keep Indoors Cool

Close blinds or curtains during the day, and open windows in the evening when it’s cooler. Use fans or take cool showers to lower your body temperature.

6. Check on Others

Check in with vulnerable neighbours, friends or family to ensure they’re coping in the heat, especially during heatwave alerts.

7. Never Leave Anyone in a Parked Car

Temperatures inside a car can rise dangerously fast — never leave children, pets, or vulnerable people inside, even for a short time.

Final Thought:

A bit of sunshine can be great, but don’t underestimate the power of the heat. With a few precautions, you can enjoy the best of summer without putting your health at risk.
