HRT Prescription Exemption – What You Need to Know

From 1 April 2023, patients in England can benefit from a Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC), making HRT more affordable for those who need it long-term.

What is the HRT PPC?

The HRT PPC is a prescription exemption certificate that covers the cost of eligible HRT medicines for 12 months, regardless of how many items you need.

  • Cost: £19.30 (as of 2025) – one-off annual payment
  • Covers all eligible HRT medicines prescribed during the year
  • Can be used alongside other PPCs or medical exemptions if needed

What Does It Cover?

The HRT PPC covers most commonly prescribed treatments for menopause symptoms, such as:

  • Oestrogen-only patches, gels, tablets, or sprays
  • Combined HRT (oestrogen + progestogen)
  • Vaginal oestrogen products (pessaries, creams)
  • Some progesterone medicines (if used as part of HRT)

How to Apply

You can buy the HRT PPC:

  • Online: via the NHS Business Services Authority website
  • By phone: 0300 330 2089
  • At your pharmacy: if they are registered to sell PPCs

Once purchased, your PPC will be active immediately or from a future start date you choose.

Important Notes

  • Only valid in England (prescriptions are free in other UK nations)
  • Only covers HRT medicines – not other prescriptions
  • Show your PPC or provide your reference number when collecting your HRT prescription
