Hay fever Advice

Hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) is a common allergic reaction to pollen, typically affecting people in spring and summer. Symptoms can include:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Itchy, red, or watery eyes
  • Itchy throat, mouth, nose or ears
  • Headaches or sinus pressure
  • Tiredness due to disturbed sleep

Over-the-Counter Treatments

Many effective hay fever treatments are available from pharmacies without a prescription. These include:

Antihistamines

  • Help reduce sneezing, runny nose, and itching
  • Non-drowsy options: cetirizine, loratadine, fexofenadine
  • Usually taken once a day

Nasal Sprays

  • Help relieve congestion and prevent symptoms
  • Steroid sprays: beclometasone (Beconase), fluticasone (Piriteze Nasal), mometasone (Clarinase)
  • Best used daily during pollen season

Eye Drops

  • Help soothe itchy, red, or watery eyes
  • Look for sodium cromoglicate or antihistamine-based drops

Self-Care Tips

  • Keep windows and doors shut when pollen counts are high (especially early morning/evening)
  • Shower and change clothes after being outside
  • Avoid drying clothes outdoors during peak pollen times
  • Use wraparound sunglasses to protect your eyes
  • Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly around nostrils to trap pollen

When to See a GP

See your GP if:

  • Over-the-counter treatments aren’t helping
  • Symptoms are severe or affecting daily life
  • You have asthma and symptoms are getting worse

A GP may offer stronger medications or refer you to an allergy specialist.

For more advice, speak to your local pharmacist—they can help you choose the right products and manage symptoms effectively.

Stay safe this season!
